Every hand follows the same rhythm. Two players post the small and big blinds to start the pot, and everyone gets two hole cards. The first betting round begins with the player left of the big blind, who can fold, call, or raise. Then comes the flop: three community cards, face up, followed by another betting round. The turn adds a fourth card, the river a fifth, each with its own round of betting. If two or more players are still in after the river, hands go to showdown, and the best five-card hand, built from any combination of your two cards and the five on the board, takes the pot.

You can also win without showing your cards. If you bet and every other player folds, you win the pot regardless of the hand you’re holding. Knowing when to bet, call, raise, or fold is where much of the strategy comes in. The rules take five minutes; mastering them takes a little longer.
